For those of you who don't know and may be wondering why I am on this mission, Jo Thompson Szymanski is a friend of mine who has fought her bone marrow disease with courage, grace and style for over six years. Now she is on the road to full recovery, all because of a bone marrow transplant.
I was blessed to have had the opportunity to assist Jo as her primary care giver during the first few weeks of the transplant procedure. While there, I focused on and became a part of an amazing and life giving process that gave a second chance to Jo. I connected with the other transplant patients and their families, and I was touched by their sense of community and inspired by their strength and endurance.
Jo found a perfect match from her brother Eddie. Most of the patients on the Unit at MD Anderson were not as lucky. They needed to look to the world wide bone marrow registry to find a match, and because there was someone out there, a stranger, who joined the registry, they too became lucky enough to join Jo and other transplant patients on the journey to wellness and recovery.
